About the Shelf

Burnish samples what ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini answer when shoppers ask about products, and records which brands they name. The Shelf publishes those answers, with their dates, one page per question, and one unlisted page per store showing how that store fares.

The BurnishShelf crawler

To write a store's page we read a few of the store's own public pages: the home page, the contact and about pages, the contact information policy, and the public product catalog (at most 250 products). The crawler identifies itself as BurnishShelf/1.0 (+https://shelf.useburnish.com/about), sends at most one request a second, and obeys robots.txt.

To keep it out of your store, add this to your robots.txt:

Removing a page

Every email we send about a page carries a removal link. One click removes the page and stops all email about it. You can also reply to that email and we will remove it by hand.
